Principles of Horticultural Crop Cultivation is designed for Stage 3 Students who are undertaking dual undergraduate degree programmes at Guangzhou-Dublin International College. The module specifically aims to develop students’ understanding about principles in cultivation of horticultural crops, involving knowledge of classification of diverse horticultural crops, anatomy of plants, growth and development at different ontogenetic stages of horticultural plants, growth environment, vegetative and reproductive propagation, location and management of an orchard, tree pruning, production of vegetables in field, greenhouse management, and organic farming. Class is taught in topics in English. Students develop their English technical terms as well as learning and skills in horticultural crop management. Classroom activities such as problem-shooting discussions will support the development of students’ academic study competences. In addition, on-class quiz is assigned for each topic.

Materials for the module include Principle of Horticultural Crop Cultivation (3rd edition) (in Chinese, Shuangxi Fan and Chenguang Li eds. China Agricultural University Press, Beijing, ) and Horticulture: Principle and Practices (George Acquaah, ed. Pearson Education, Upper Saddle River, 2009.).

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
• understand horticulture in three perspectives: a science, an art and an industry.
• understand scientific and operational classification of horticultural plants.
• understand biology of plant growth, development and ontogenetic phases.
• understand chief abiotic factors, temperature, light, moisture and soil, influencing plant growth and development.
• understand advantages and disadvantages as well as methods of asexual propagation of horticultural plants.
• understand the processes of sexual propagation and seed production of horticultural plants
• master principles and skills in vegetable and other herb production in greenhouses and in the open field.
• understand factors to consider for locating an orchard and major practices in orchard managements.
• understanding rules, regulations and practices in organic farming.
• master a large number of English technical terms related to horticultural plant cultivation.
• improve ability to explain and find solutions to problems in horticultural crop production based on understanding the principles.
