FS40370 Media, Gender, and Sexuality

Academic Year 2022/2023

For decades, the media have been an important force in shaping conceptions of gender, race, and sexuality. This module will focus on the interdisciplinary and intersectional analyses of media texts, focusing on the ways in which they engage with gender & sexuality. Drawing from a wide range of academic literature including feminist theory, queer theory, critical race theory, feminist film theory, postcolonial theory, and cultural studies, we will trace the many meanings of mediated representations of gender in the 20th and 21st centuries. Along with film and television, we will also look at how the prevalence of digital media is transforming our understanding of gender and power. The module focuses on both Western and global feminist perspectives on gender, race, class, and sexuality. Students are expected to develop advanced analytical, research, and writing skills.
