Cinema Creatives: An Introduction to the Cinema Landscape in Ireland
Over 12 weeks, this course will provide an immersive dive into contemporary Irish cinema culture and introductions to key creative forces within film production, while also exploring the areas such as exhibition and distribution and explore how our national cinema is shaped by film criticism and media. The course will be structured around a weekly interview with a noted film practitioner, accompanied by a related screening. The course will outline the diverse backgrounds, routes, training and influences of key creatives and outline the structure of filmmaking teams and their role in contemporary Irish cinema. The curation and programming of film is a vital element of cinema exhibition and this course will offer students the opportunity to learn about key aspects of film programming, engage with industry experts and design their own film event. Students will be encouraged to submit and ask questions of guests.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to identify and describe key jobs/roles in film production, exhibition, and distribution.
Students will be able to define the job of film programming and its importance to the film industry. They will execute (with a group) their own short programme.
Students will develop collaborative working skills, written and oral communication skills, visual analysis skills.
Students will have a rich understanding of the Irish film industry, including elements they may not have been familiar with like producing, programming, and exhibition.

Indicative Module Content:


Final group projects will be presented in a 2-hour session Week 12. For both these weeks, students should plan additional time accordingly.

Each week, students will watch an assigned film before the lecture session, which will take the format of an interview or presentation from a film industry professional. Indicative topics may include: screenwriting, directing, documentary making, exhibition, producing, development, programming, criticism, editing, distribution, etc.

The United Nations identified seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as core to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UCD contributes in general to SDG 4 Quality Education. Further SDGs explored within this module if relevant are listed below. A scale of 1 - 5 indicates the extent to which the SDG is covered.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Lecture sessions will be in the format of interviews with industry professionals. Students will be supported in preparing questions for guests during tutorials and encouraged to submit questions for guests.

Tutorials are an absolutely essential component of this module. The major assessment is a group project in which students will programme their own film event. Support for and discussion of that project will take place in tutorials. Groups will be assigned in tutorials and group work toward that project may take place during tutorial sessions.

Students will engage in group work as well as being individually responsible for weekly viewings (online) and assigned weekly readings (available in Brightspace).

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will receive a combination of individual written feedback, graded assessments, and oral group/class feedback during lectures and tutorials. Each piece of in-trimester assessment will receive feedback/grade within 21 days.
