FS10020 Introduction to Film and Media Theory

This module follows and builds on the knowledge of visual language and analysis skills introduced in FS10010 Perspectives on Media 1. In Spring, students will be introduced to a variety of approaches to interpreting and understanding media in context. Topics may include: Gender, Nation, Historical context, Race, Sexuality, and Industrial context among others. The class will include case studies in film, television, and other media forms.

Learning outcomes• Ability to analyse media for its aesthetic representation of social, cultural and political contexts• An understanding of how media changes in relation to technological, historical, and cultural changes • Organise a basic, cogent argument about a media text and defend it with visual and aural evidence from the film, television show, or other media product
