This module continues the study of French language (syntax, grammar, lexis, orthography) undertaken in previous years through close study of a variety of texts and regular production of related written work. Across the written and oral strands of the module, the common emphasis is on precise handling of the French language at a sophisticated level. At the same time, readings are selected to deepen students' insights into strands of thought in French on a range of questions. Classes are conducted in French. Students who have achieved at least a B grade in this module are deemed to be successfully progressing towards level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Students who participate fully in this module (regular attendance and submission of weekly work) and who complete it successfully should be able to:
-- read and follow intellectually complex arguments in sophisticated written French
-- manipulate and express ideas related to the readings in correct and complex French
-- understand and offer comments on audio/visual discussions in correct and complex spoken French
-- engage in spontaneous conversation on a range of topics.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Weekly language workshops (written and oral) with weekly submission of written work.

Teaching delivery:
Written and oral classes operate in a workshop format. Active student preparation and class participation is essential. This includes full engagement with all tasks and materials (oral and written) made available on Brightspace, as well as weekly submission of written work and completion of worksheets for oral classes.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Students must have passed French Language 2a and 2b (FR20020 and FR20040).

Learning Exclusions:

Students who have already completed FR30010 or FR30130 must consult the module coordinator if they intend to register for either FR30310 or FR30320.

Learning Recommendations:

Level 2 French Literature modules incorporating a significant reading load in French.

Weekly exercises practise the activities examined in assessments. These activities are marked and returned with feedback. Students also receive informal oral group feedback on these activities in small-group settings.
