FR30310 French Language 3a: Expression avancée

This module continues the study of French language (syntax, grammar, lexis, orthography) undertaken in previous years through close study of a variety of contemporary journalistic texts and regular production of related written work. Across the written and oral strands of the module, the common emphasis is on precise handling of the French language at a sophisticated level: précis-writing (ie synopsis) and proficiency in aural comprehension and oral presentation are core emphases in the module. At the same time, readings deepen students' insights into current thinking in French on a range of contemporary questions. Classes are conducted in French. Students who have achieved at least a B grade in this module are deemed to be successfully progressing towards level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who participate fully in this module (regular attendance and submission of weekly work) and who complete it successfully should be able to:
-- read and understand sophisticated journalistic French
-- summarise the argument of a complex newspaper article and formulate a related set of points, all in correct and complex French
-- follow a discussion in complex French
-- prepare and deliver a short oral presentation.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Weekly language workshops (written and oral) with weekly submission of written work.

Teaching delivery:
Written and oral classes operate in a workshop format. Active student preparation and class participation is essential. This includes full engagement with all tasks and materials (oral and written) made available on Brightspace, as well as weekly submission of written work and completion of worksheets for oral classes. 
Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Students must have passed French Language 2a and 2b (FR20020 and FR20040).

Learning Exclusions:

Students who have already completed FR30010 or FR30130 must consult the module coordinator if they intend to register for either FR30310 or FR30320.

Learning Recommendations:

Level 2 French Literature modules incorporating a significant reading load in French.
