This is a level-one module in French and it focuses mostly on poetry and song. The primary aim is to develop students' ability not just to read and speak French and to understand written and spoken French and to develop their deep reading skills. The material studied will range from sixteenth-century to twentieth-century texts. At least one text will be assigned each week for intensive study and there will be some discussion of the cultural background of the various texts.

Teaching takes place at a weekly plenary session (a lecture) and a weekly tutorial. It is essential that students attend both weekly sessions, as the tutorial hour aims to develop, in a small group setting, the reading skills introduced in the larger, more impersonal 'lecture' or plenary setting.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to read or speak aloud (or sing!) a number of culturally significant texts in French with confidence and enjoyment. They should also be able to understand and describe, analyse and remember the language of those texts, as well as their form, their meaning and their cultural context.

They should be able to demonstrate their active development of these skills both orally and in writing in their two weekly contact hours and in their assessed work.

Indicative Module Content:

A range of poems in French from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries.

Plenary reading workshops (Lectures); tutorial speaking practice and discussions (including some group work); weekly worksheets to prepare as homework; autonomous learning supported by supplementary material posted on Brightspace.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will practice answering critical reading questions in the plenary sessions and will get immediate in-session group feedback on their answers. Group feedback on the class tests will be provided orally in the plenary/lecture sessions. Additionally, more in-depth feedback on class tests, including written feedback on students' individual performance, will be provided to students in tutorials.
