This is a level-one module in French and it focuses mostly on poetry. The primary aim is to develop students' ability not just to read French but to read short texts in French critically and analytically. The material studied will range from sixteenth-century to twentieth-century texts. At least one text will be assigned each week for intensive study and there will be some discussion of the cultural background of the various texts.

Teaching takes place at a weekly plenary session (a lecture) and a weekly tutorial. It is essential that students attend both weekly sessions, as the tutorial hour aims to develop, in a small group setting, the reading skills introduced in the larger, more impersonal 'lecture' setting.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to understand, describe, analyze and even, we hope, remember the language principally, but also the form, meaning and cultural contexts of about ten key short texts texts in French.

They should be able to demonstrate their active development of these skills orally in their weekly tutorials and also in their completion of the written tests.

Plenary reading workshops (Lectures); tutorial discussions (including some group work); weekly homework questions to prepare for the tutorial session; autonomous learning supported by supplementary material posted on Brightspace.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will practice answering critical reading questions in the plenary sessions and will get immediate in-session group feedback on their answers. Group feedback on the class tests will be provided orally in the plenary/lecture sessions. Additionally, more in-depth feedback on class tests, including written feedback on students' individual performance, will be provided to students in tutorials.
