Curricular information is subject to change.

This module provides an introduction to mapping for presentation and data analysis using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This course will also feature an introduction to remote sensing. The primary focus of this module is to develop skills to objectively quantify the spatial distribution of forest resources for management, planning and research purposes.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Topics covered will include: The fundamental concepts of GIS and remote sensing. Understanding georeferenced GIS raster and vector data sources and web services. Development of hands-on GIS skills for point, line, polygon and attribute creation and editing within ArcGIS. Enhancement and integration of GIS data sources. Importing and joining external attribute files to layers within a GIS. Building GIS queries. Integration of vector, raster and attribute GIS databases. Specification of GIS database structure. Digital area, perimeter and centroid estimation. Application and use of GIS and remote sensing in sustainable forest management (SFM) spatial resource inventory. This module is focused on developing the skills in GIS which can easily be transferred to other modules and research projects.
