FOR30350 Forest Certification and Sustainable Forest Management

Academic Year 2022/2023

This seven week Stage 3 elective module introduces the key concepts of sustainable forest management (SFM), including its historic, policy and economic frameworks. The translation of SFM into policy for the management of Irish forests and the criteria, indicators and measures associated are also discussed.
The advent of third party forest certification initiatives and their relationship to SFM are also introduced; including an overview of the most dominant certification schemes and how they operate. The relevance of certification to Irish forest management and Irish processing industries is discussed in detail.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Understand the concept of SFM and its global and national context, historical and current.
2. Demonstrate an appreciation of how the SFM paradigm has influenced forest management.
3. Identify the key components of successful third party forest certification schemes and exhibit specific understanding of the major schemes in operation currently.
4. Differentiate between SFM and certification and critique whether certification is relevant to achieve SFM.
5. Discuss in detail the application of types of forest certification in Irish forests and timber processing entities.
6. Research topics & communicate findings to others.
