FIN20050 Corporate Finance

In this subject we build on the corporate finance content of a previous introductory finance course. We cover the theory, practice and evidence on corporate investment and financing decisions: capital budgeting, capital structure, cost of capital, raising finance, dividend policy, agency issues, Mergers and Divestments, corporate control and governance.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module students will be expected to be able to: - Explain theory on capital structure, dividend policy and agency issues, and the extent to which it holds in reality.- Apply the techniques associated with capital budgeting, such as calculating an appropriate cost of capital, in a real-world setting. - Critically appraise the extent to which agency issues and corporate governance affect corporate financing and investment decisions.- Describe the various approaches used by firms to raise finance and demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of the various sources of finance. Acquire a developed understanding of the techniques employed to assess both proposed mergers and divestments. Have a good understanding of the issues relating to corporate governance.

Students must have taken and passed FIN20010 Principles of Finance (or a similar introductory finance course).
