How we use our land has implications for human life, biodiversity and climate action. This module will explore the intersection between land use planning and environmental sustainability within the context of urban and rural development. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the principles, theories, and practical applications necessary for promoting sustainable land use practices in contemporary settings. The module will explore the factors influencing land use patterns and methodologies to assess the environmental impacts of land use decisions, including climate change, biodiversity and natural resource impacts. Through international case studies and policy reviews, students will compare existing land use policies and develop strategies for integrating sustainability principles into land use planning, while exploring strategies to engage diverse stakeholders for equitable and inclusive decision making.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1) Demonstrate an awareness of key environmental issues related to land use and land use change, including their impacts on biodiversity, climate change, and natural resources.
2) Evaluate the balance between environmental, social, and economic considerations for sustainable land use management to address competing priorities.
3) Demonstrate an awareness of key policy and legislative initiatives that impact European and national land use planning
