This module will serve as an overarching sustainability module within the Environmental Sustainability programme, which aims to connect from a more general perspective all the individual components taught in depth in other modules in the programme. This module aims to give students a comprehensive and transdisciplinary perspective of sustainability, including aspects of economic, societal, and environmental sustainability.
Students will be made familiar with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and will learn to identify how the SDGs relate to the different areas of sustainability within a project.
Students will also learn to identify the different areas of challenges to sustainability for a specific project or problem and will consolidate their knowledge to critically assess potential solutions.

Learning Outcomes:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the complexity and diversity of sustainability issues across a range of industries and topics both from an Irish perspective as well as in the wider global context
• Demonstrate familiarity with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and identify which SDGs are relevant to a specific project
• Identify and critically assess the different areas of challenges to sustainability within a given project both from an Irish perspective as well as in the wider global context

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will be studying the concepts of sustainability in a combination of online lectures, active learning tasks, critical writing and case based learning. Students will apply the acquired knowledge to a specific project of their own choosing throughout the course of the module.
Students will not be required to come to campus for any part of this module. All learning will take place through materials posted online, online student-teacher interaction, or autonomous student learning.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback on a student's progress will be given to the student throughout the course of the module. As part of the continuous assessment, students will receive feedback on their discussion contributions and question submissions at regular intervals throughout the module. The student will also have the opportunity to receive peer feedback on a draft report handed in at least 3 weeks before the final report deadline. All students will receive their final feedback within three weeks of their report submission. Students have the opportunity to receive peer feedback on their presentations from their fellow students. They will also receive feedback from the module coordinator within three weeks of their presentation. Feedback on the short in class test on the sustainable development goals will be provided online automatically by the test software.
