This module is delivered online for students of the MSc, Graduate Diploma or Certificate in Environmental Sustainability (Negotiated Learning) course. It is not available to undergraduate students.

This module introduces students to the fundamental principles of ecology and its application. Topics include: population, community and ecosystem ecology, scales of variation in space and time, methodological approaches to characterising ecological patterns and processes, important links with other disciplines, humans as a source of impact on ecological patterns and processes, areas of human activity that require input from ecologists, such as agriculture, fisheries, disease control, conservation and environmental management.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

• Describe the fundamental principles of ecology;
• Differentiate between ecological patterns and processes at different scales and levels of biological organisation (population, community and ecosystem);
• Understand and debate how ecological knowledge can be applied to a range of challenges faced by society;
• Further develop more specialised ecological knowledge and skills through subsequent modules.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The majority of the content of this module is available as short recorded online lectures. Textbooks and additional reading are recommended and there is an online discussion forum. This is supplemented by online (Skype/Zoom) tutorials and feedback sessions in relation to continuous assessment assignments.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Written feedback is provided for individual continuous assessment assignments and general discussions of key aspects of assignments are undertaken during online tutorials. Students are offered the opportunity to submit drafts of the essays they prepare for the final exam to receive initial feedback.
