The module aims to equip students with a broad appreciation of the underlying physics, mathematics and technologies underpinning microscopy, radiography and medical image processing. Students will learn about imaging theory. They will be introduced to the core imaging modalities in use today.

This is an elective module intended primarily for biomedical engineering students. While other students are welcome, it will be assumed that the student is familiar with Fourier transforms and MATLAB.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, the successful student will be able to:
• Describe the principles underlying a range of modalities including but not limited to X-ray projection imaging and MRI.
• Understand and describe the uses and limitation of each modality.
• Use a Fourier optics description to analyse imaging systems including microscopes.
• Perform denoising using the wavelet transform.
• Perform pattern classification using neural networks.
• Appreciate current research trends in biomedical imaging.

Indicative Module Content:

Medical imaging, microscopy and related signal processing.

Autumn/Winter 2020: Online asynchronous lectures. No exam. Continuous assessment by means of group project with weekly meetings (face-to-face or online).
