This module covers digital modulation and coding techniques for wired and radio channels. It includes an introduction to information theory.

Learning Outcomes:

The students will learn how to design an optimum receiver for any digital modulation system based on signal space concepts. The concepts learned in class will also be supported by assignments that will further enhance the students' understanding through "learning-by-doing".

Indicative Module Content:

Basics of Probability Theory, Signal-Space Concepts, Gram-Schmidt Procedure, Optimum Receiver Design for Binary signals in AWGN Channels, Optimum Receiver Design for M-Ary signals in AWGN Channels, Probability of Error Analyses, Information Theory, Linear Block Codes, Convolutional Codes, Viterbi Algorithm, OFDM systems.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module will be taught mainly based on the in-class lectures. There will be video learning materials given to the students. There might also be in-class assignments and group activities to facilitate learning.
