The purpose of this module is to support Year 2 Trainee Educational Psychologists in developing their chosen research idea into a feasible research plan. The introductory topics covered in Year 1 will be developed, with further inputs on epistemology and methodology, research ethics, advanced quantitative and qualitative methods and analysis, mixed methods, children' voice, and positionality. Students will apply the content in class through coding of transcriptions and analysis of quantitative data in SPSS.

Learning Outcomes:

• Be able to develop appropriate research questions for their topic
• Apply appropriate research design and methods to their research questions
• Understand the philosophical paradigms underpinning research
• Be able to write a research ethics application relevant to their study
• Be able to code interview transcripts and produce a thematic analysis of qualitative data
• Be able to undertake multivariate analyses of quantitative data in SPSS
• Show an awareness of the limitations of their chosen research design and methods

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The Research Studies Panel member will grade the empirical study outline plan, the ethics application, and the empirical journal article draft, and will give written feedback to the student. General feedback will be given to the group in a tutorial, post-submission. Formative feedback will be given from module staff during student presentations of work in progress. Peer feedback will be given during student presentations of work in progress.
