This module introduces Masters students to approaches to the use of academic research in both their reading and their writing. It includes the study of approaches to designing research, and determining how to communicate research outputs. Students will become familiar with how to do efficient and thorough library searches, how to source theses and dissertations in their own research area, how to use online sources, and how to engage with published research. Students will also develop the skills of academic writing, and will learn how to synthesis their own research into useful dissemination tools such as conference posters and short podcasts.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to search for relevant research to support their learning and writing; students will be able to complete research writing tasks, including research design tasks and academic writing tasks. Students will be able to disseminate their work effectively using both social media and print formats. Students will be able to work independently on research writing, and will be able to plan and coordinate their research writing.

Indicative Module Content:

Academic writing skills; synthesis and summarising; searching; research design principles; using online tools effectively in research writing; writing for publication; writing abstracts and paper proposals; writing for presentations; using social media to disseminate research writing; podcasting and web design to disseminate research.
