EDUC44000 MA (Ed) Thesis

Academic Year 2022/2023

The MA (Ed) thesis comprises a 20-credit desk-based study.
Each student has a thesis supervisor, with whom they develop a thesis topic and research plan, and with whom they have supervisory meetings.

The thesis comprises an original and systematic study of a topic, drawing on extensive literature, and providing insight, analysis and a critical perspective on the topic under review.

Students may chose to compare research findings / literature across several countries, drawing on data and published work.
Students may also use existing datasets, that are available openly.
Additionally, students may make used of digital collections, such as archival collections, in their work.

The precise nature of the data and research to be analysed, will be agreed with the supervisor before the student commences working on the thesis.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to identify relevant research, in order to gather data, analyse existing research, and draw conclusions. Students will be able to use library and online sources in a scholarly way, and draw on research to develop their own scholarship. Students will develop the facility to critique research, and compare research.

Indicative Module Content:

The themes and topics that students chose for their thesis research varies from student to student.
Generally, the research examines aspects of education. The topic for investigation is determined after consultation with the thesis supervisor.
The module coordinator provides necessary guidance and direction concerning the thesis module, including how to prepare the thesis proposal, ways of working with your supervisor, use of the library and resources, preparation of the final thesis for submission, and any other issues that arise for the students.
