EDUC43350 Educational Research Writing

The module prepares students for to for conduct a Literature Review in their chosen field.
Students will be introduced to the key components of a Literature Review (current knowledge in field; substantive findings in recent literature in a field; methodological and theoretical concerns), and will develop a clear understanding of how to interrogate these components, when writing their own Literature Review.

Students will learn how to use library and online tools to source the literature (databases, search engines etc); students will learn how to carry out an appraisal of existing literature; students will learn how to use the literature review to prepare a series of academic questions to investigate, develop written critiques of samples of academic papers/journal articles, and learn to synthesis/analyse academic writing (book chapters, articles, reports).

Student will learn how to develop their own Literature Review in such a way that it provides a clear account of secondary literature, without breaching any of the regulations concerning plagiarism.

Students will learn how to prepare their written work using academic conventions, and learn how to proof and correct written work. To develop the necessary skills (including library use), and to benefit from the learning, the module coordinator will commence working with the class during trimester one, and continue giving inputs in trimester two, while delivering the main content in trimester three, in workshops, seminars and classes. Peer-reviewing of sample writing will be conducted in class, and students will learn how to evaluate samples of academic writing.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module students will be able to:
Conduct a literature review; select samples of academic papers and chapters, to prepare a literature review draft, on a thematic area; prepare a table of contents, a bibliography and a sample set of appendices, for a report/chapter; critically evaluate samples of academic writing (articles, reports and chapters).

Indicative Module Content:

How to conduct a literature review; how to use library tools to manage your data; preparing an outline of a Literature Review; developing an argument in your writing; providing a synthesis and analysis of relevant literature in your field; using illustrative material in your Literature Review; paraphrasing and quoting correctly in your work; creating a bibliography and appendices; reviewing, editing and proofing work for submission/publication; regulations concerning plagiarism.
