EDUC42910 Research Methods 2 (Blended)

This module follows on from Research Methods 1, which introduced students to the methods and skills needed to undertake postgraduate social science and educational research. This module will build on the previous module by developing student’s knowledge of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Students will gain experience in using SPSS to work with quantitative data from Growing Up in Ireland, and will conduct univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses. Students will also work with interview transcripts to apply coding and thematic analysis. Further qualitative methods such as Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Grounded Theory, Discourse Analysis and Narrative Analysis will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will:

1. Be familiar with the concepts underlying the statistical analysis of quantitative data in educational research
2. Be competent in using SPSS to manage and manipulate quantitative data
2. Understand descriptive and inferential statistics and select appropriate techniques for answering specific research questions;
4. Be competent analysing and coding interview transcripts
5. Be able to apply thematic analysis and demonstrate familiarity with other forms of qualitative analysis
6. Be able to conduct and report on quantitative and qualitative analyses
