Academic Year 2021/2022

This module aims to equip students with the skills to plan, design and undertake high quality educational research. During the module, students will be taught how to prepare for a research project by conducting a critical review of relevant literature to inform their research questions and hypotheses. They will be introduced to qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research designs, methods and approaches, as well ethical considerations underpinning educational research. Students will be given the opportunity to work in groups to discuss and plan research.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Identify the core principles of quantitative and qualitative research
2. Formulate research questions and select research designs appropriate to different research questions
3. Search for and critically review research literature
4. Understand a range of data collection and approaches and methods
5. Demonstrate an awareness of ethical issues in educational research
6. Describe a research design for a small-scale Masters-level research project
