EDUC42780 Children's Literature

Academic Year 2022/2023

*** Not available in the academic year indicated above ***

This module encourages a critical appreciation of Children’s Literature and is open to students from any discipline. We will read a broad range of children’s texts, from early-years picture books to young adult fiction. Exploring the moral and fantastical dimensions of children’s writing, we will consider specifically how texts from Victorian to contemporary times have constructed changing notions of the child and childhood. We will explore also how the pedagogy of P4C (“Philosophy for Children”) uses children’s books to introduce a range of philosophical and ethical topics. Towards the end of the module, students will have the opportunity to develop a creative presentation on an author or text of their choice.

Sample Texts:

"The Giving Tree", "Frog in Love", "Where the Wild Things Are", "The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish", "Coraline", "A Little Princess", "The Secret Garden", "Matilda", "The BFG", "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", "Asking for It", "Northern Lights", "The Hunger Games".
