While Module 1 focuses in the main on Junior Cycle, this module aims to provide students with extended pedagogical skills that will allow them to transition the experiences of the Junior cycle music student to the requirements of Senior cycle music education. This module will examine more deeply, the musical knowledge, understanding and skills required by the Senior Curriculum in Music and will engage the student in the consideration of the maturity of artistic potential envisaged in this programme. Key areas will include advanced listening and analysis, applications of music theory, development of advanced composing tasks – melodic, harmonic, contrapuntal & improvised, aural training, classroom performing and a comprehensive understanding of the tradition of Irish music. The module will examine in detail the roles and potential of technology in the music classroom.

Learning Outcomes:

Year 2

On completion of this module, students will be enabled to understand, foster and develop
• the impact of acquired competency gained through further integrated development of the three key skills of Performing, Listening and Composing
• the further practice of Performing skills introduced at Junior Cycle level with increased focus on programme creation, expression, performance techniques, style etc
• the pupil’s understanding and their ability to apply and adapt theoretical aspects of music in an integrated manner through continuation and broadening of methodologies introduced in Junior Cycle
• the pupil’s understanding of form, composition, style, texture and general musical features through analytical study of key period styles and Set Course Works
• an awareness of the relevance and links between historical developments of style and music of today
• the pupil’s ability to express and respond to music in a musically literate and personally objective manner
• the pupil’s composing skills, based on inner ear ability, to create more advanced melodic compositions mindful of form, tonality, key, metre and style.
• pupils’ comprehension, musical appreciation of and ability to engage in polyphonic writing
• enhanced pupil understanding and creative insight into Western and Popular harmonic structures, progressions and potential, based on aural concepts
• exploration and familiarization in areas of music technology with specific attention to notation packages such as Sibelius, Finale, Musescore and software applications which enable composing, recording and editing e.g. Garageband, Audacity etc
• an active pursuance of and ongoing professional and personal engagement with areas of course content, methodologies and musical styles in a subject with an ever-changing canvas
