EDUC42230 CSPE Methodologies II

Academic Year 2023/2024

Over the course of this Year 2 module, students will explore further the rationale for teaching Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE) and continue to develop the professional skills necessary to teach it. They will have a considered understanding of the importance of Citizenship Education, across the second level curriculum, to the learning of all students and possess a sophisticated knowledge of how to use Citizenship Education as an anchor subject around which key connections can be made with a range of related subject areas. They will develop an understanding of how students learn through Citizenship Education, by engaging in active and enquiry based learning, and in particular will appreciate the central significance of how students can learn about active responsible citizenship and participation in contemporary society. They will progressively learn how to integrate theory and practice and, on completion of the module, will exhibit a high level of competence and confidence in integrated approaches to teaching the Citizenship Education curriculum in second level schools, for example (1) Tackling Controversial Issues in the Citizenship Education Classroom, (2) Teaching CSPE to Students in need of Learning Supports, (3)Enabling Student Voice in the Citizenship Classroom, (4) Other Citizenship Education Educational Experiences, including Development Education, (5) Social Innovation/Social Entrepreneurship in Transition Year and (6) Leaving Certificate Politics and Society.
