This module provides students with a comprehensive account of the development of education in Ireland. The module looks closely at primary and second level education, with an emphasis on the latter; the history of third level education is examined briefly. Throughout the module, the frameworks for education change and development in Ireland will be examined, and students will have the opportunity to examine relevant education policy, laws and issues. Some thematic areas will be examined closely, allowing students to develop an understanding of legacy issues. These thematic areas may include: the involvement of the churches in education; gender and education; education and social control; education and minorities; sport in schooling; school histories; the State and education; the training and development of teachers. Sources will include: primary source materials; legislation and policy documents; film; images; archival sources; podcasts; selected readings. Online materials will be indicated for participants. The thematic areas are covered in lectures to the whole class, and discussed in small-group online seminars (2).

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the module students will be able to:
Outline how education has developed in Ireland (policies, laws, practices)
Identify watershed moments in Irish education history
Construct an education time line that can position schools within the overall arc of education development in Ireland
Decribe and analyse education change
Write critical and reflective assignments
Make clear connections between the past and the present, with reference to education policy and practice
Situate their own education experiences within education history
Draw upon key texts in the history of education, to develop written and oral work
Conduct independent research on the history of Irish education



Indicative Module Content:

Thematic areas that are covered typically include: the history of formal schooling in Ireland; the involvement of the various Churches in education; the State and education; the history of teacher education and training in Ireland; gender and education provision; sports in schooling; school ethos and school identity; education in the revolutionary period; education for minorities; the history of additional needs in education contexts.
The two (remote) online seminars are for small groups. and students discuss the lecture content with their own groups.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

Whole group lectures, and small group online seminars.
Group lectures are delivered to the whole class together, and their are some guest speakers who are professionals in their areas.

The blended format facilitates two online small-group seminars, where students can unpack the content covered in lectures. and there is a tutorial at the end of the module.

Reading activities; self-directed learning; lectures and presentation of data; online activities; listening to and commenting on podcasts; viewing and commenting critically on relevant film clips; chatroom/tutorial discussion.
