Outline how education has developed in Ireland (policies, laws, practices)
Identify watershed moments in Irish education history
Construct an education time line that can position schools within the overall arc of education development in Ireland
Decribe and analyse education change
Write critical and reflective assignments
Make clear connections between the past and the present, with reference to education policy and practice
Situate their own education experiences within education history
Draw upon key texts in the history of education, to develop written and oral work
Conduct independent research on the history of Irish education
Indicative Module Content:
Thematic areas that are covered typically include: the history of formal schooling in Ireland; the involvement of the various Churches in education; the State and education; the history of teacher education and training in Ireland; gender and education provision; sports in schooling; school ethos and school identity; education in the revolutionary period; education for minorities; the history of additional needs in education contexts.
The two (remote) online seminars are for small groups. and students discuss the lecture content with their own groups.
