EDUC40130 Inclusion and Equality in Education

Academic Year 2021/2022

This is a compulsory First Year module for students on the Professional Doctorate in Educational Psychology Course and is also accessible to students on postgraduate courses in Education or Special Needs Education.The aim of the module is to facilitate an exploration and understanding of the concepts, issues, policies and legislation pertaining to inclusive education, as applied to students with disabilities/special educational needs, students from minority cultures and students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Critically discuss the current discourses in relation to Disability, Special Educational Needs, Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity.
2. Demonstrate an awareness of the socially constructed nature of concepts such as Intelligence, (Dis)Ability and Special Educational Needs.
3. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of Irish equality and disability legislation and make some comparison with relevant legislation in other jurisdictions.
4. Critically examine various approaches to the organisation of provision for students with disabilities/special educational needs. 5. Apply the principles of Organisational Psychology and Systems Theory to the school system.
6. Demonstrate an awareness of the issues involved in inclusive multi-cultural education and bi-lingual education and of the particular challenges experienced by children for whom English is an additional language.
7. Show awareness of the impact of social disadvantage on educational achievement and demonstrate an understanding of the concept of educational resilience.

1. Current discourses in relation to Disability, Special Educational Needs, Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity.
2. Irish equality and disability legislation and comparable legislation in other jurisdictions.
3. Inclusive organisation of provision for students with disabilities/special educational needs.

6. Role, if any, of special schools within an inclusive education system.
7. Inclusive multi-cultural education and bi-lingual education.
