This course combines lectures on the theory of digital pedagogy with practical workshops on digital teaching and design skills to ground students in both the theory and praxis of online language teaching. The course will also explore digital pedagogies as a means for teaching language within the post-primary classroom. It will demonstrate the depth and breath of digital resources available for teaching in a language learning classroom.

Students will explore the following areas:
● the 7 competencies of digital skills;
● digital pedagogies and the use of ICT in the language learning classroom;
● designing and utilising digital resources for language teaching;
● using digital technology and pedagogy as inclusive practice in language learning classroom;
● developing digital literacy as a teacher and for students in the classroom
● designing rubrics collaboratively and harnessing the potential of online feedback;
● engaging students in the online space;
● ensuring universal design online and checking accessibility of tools and materials;
● facilitating effective language production and interaction online;
● generating reusable learning objects;
● incorporating authentic language materials into teaching while keeping student morale high.

Students may submit coursework and contribute to the module in English and/or Irish.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of the competencies associated with digital skills and identify the key characteristics of digital literacy
2. design and present appropriate digital approaches and resources to teaching language in the classroom
3. demonstrate a general understanding of the theories underpinning the field of digital pedagogy.
4. assess the potential of digital tools and deploy relevant tools in their teaching in a way which contributes meaningfully to student acquisition of learning outcomes.
5. understand and use a diverse range of online grading and feedback methods for assessment.
6. demonstrate practical technological skills in the design of reusable learning objects.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Fully online module. Learning materials will be pre-recorded so that students can view them as suits their timetable. Students will have the opportunity to meet the lecturer virtually by appointment. All learning materials will be accessed through Brightspace.
