This online, self-directed module introduces students to the core concepts, skills, and practices involved in conducting educational research. It is designed to prepare student teachers for their final-year capstone project by supporting them in exploring, planning, and designing small-scale action based research grounded in classroom practice.
Aligned with the Teaching Council’s emphasis on developing student teachers as researchers and lifelong learners (Teaching Council, 2020), this module supports engagement with action research as a means of enhancing teaching and learning. It reflects the increasing importance of practitioner research in schools, as seen in initiatives such as School Self-Evaluation (Department of Education, 2022) and the An Cosán Framework (Teaching Council, 2016), which prioritise ongoing teacher professional learning and reflective practice.
The module places strong emphasis on action research, reflective inquiry, and the ability to critically engage with educational literature. Students will be introduced to key research approaches, as well as the principles of ethical, responsible research in education. It will also prepare students to collaborate with their Treoraí and school communities when identifying a suitable topic for their capstone project.
In addition to developing research literacy, students will acquire core academic skills such as searching electronic databases, referencing appropriately, and structuring a literature review.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module, students will be able to:
- Search for, access, and critically engage with peer-reviewed educational literature using academic databases and online repositories.
- Summarise and synthesise relevant educational research to support and contextualise a chosen research topic.
- Explain the importance of ethical considerations when conducting educational research.
- Formulate a clear and focused research aim suitable for a small-scale, classroom-based action research project.
- Identify and justify appropriate methods for collecting and analysing data from normal classroom practice.
- Prepare and present a research proposal to inform their Year 4 capstone project planning.

Indicative Module Content:

The module is organised into four thematic blocks, each lasting three weeks:
Block 1: Foundations of Educational Research
What is research? Why does it matter in education? What does it mean to be a teacher-researcher?
Block 2: Engaging with Literature
How do you find, read, and use research to inform your own thinking and writing?
Block 3: Planning for Action Research
How do you turn classroom reflections into researchable questions and choose methods to explore them?
Block 4: Preparing the Research Proposal
How do you put your plan together and write a clear, structured proposal for your capstone project?
