This module is for students on the English, Drama and Film pathway only. It focuses on issues of adaptation, and considers the different meanings generated by the same texts in cinematic, theatrical, literary, and digital form. Through the study of a number of case studies in a range of media forms, the module will consider issues in adaptation such as temporaral or geographical setting, cultural difference, intertextuality, performance, direct and indirect adaptation, and formal specificity, among others. It will ask students to consider what happens to a text in adaptation: does it remain connected to its 'original', or is it a new text in its own right? How is meaning, motivation, and performance translated across forms? Students will also have the opportunity to explore how this works in practice, workshopping and developing their own adaptation project.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, students will:
1. Understand key concepts of adaptation.
2. Be able to track meaning across a diverse range of adaptations of the same text.
3. Be able to write critically about the specificities of adaptation across a range of forms.
4. Be able to conceptualise and critically frame their own creative adaptation project.
