ECON42300 Research & Career Skills 2

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module focuses on preparing students for their summer trimester, during which they will be either undertake a supervised thesis or an internship. Students will deepen their understanding of research in Economics by attending research seminars. The module includes a series of lectures on research skills and preparing for the job market. Students are also required to submit their thesis/internship proposal and to give a presentation at the MSc Jamboree.

It consists of
- Classes to help prepare students to conduct an MSc thesis
- Classes to help prepare students to find a suitable internship
- Classes to help prepare students for entering the labour market
- Seminars by invited speakers on research and on working as a professional economist

Learning Outcomes:

There are four main learning outcomes for this module. Students that complete this module successfully will have a solid understanding of:
1. How to conduct a piece of research for an MSc thesis
2. How professional economists undertake research and present it to their peers
3. How to apply for a professional job and prepare for job interviews
4. What it is like to work as a professional economist.

Indicative Module Content:

This module will include topics such as:
- Information on how to write your thesis
- Information on how to find an internship
- Information on how to present a research paper
- Visits from professional economists who will talk to you about how they use economics (and economic research) in their jobs
