Students registered for the MSc in Applied Economics or the MSc in Behavioural Economics have the option to choose this Economics Internship module in lieu of a written thesis in Summer Trimester.


In order to undertake this module it should be noted that:
(i) Students are responsible for sourcing their own internships;

(ii) All internships must be first cleared for use by the module coordinator to ensure they meet the objectives of the programme

(iii) All necessary documentation must be completed before the internship commences. This includes a Host Agreement (which must be signed by the host institution and countersigned by both the student and the module coordinator) and a Student Agreement form (to be completed and signed by the student)

(iv) Part time students may do an internship, but not in the institution in which they are employed while registered for the MSc


The internship module provides a unique opportunity to put theory into practice, acquire new personal and work-related skills, and enhance employment potential on graduation. The internship is intended to be a new experience for students, allowing them to work on a full time basis in a host institution where they can develop existing and acquire new skills, while applying their economic training to new work related tasks.

Students, in consultation with the module coordinator, will arrange internship positions (paid or voluntary) in fields related to Economics either in Ireland or abroad. The goal is to relate the student's educational and academic experience to the professional needs of the host with whom they are associated.

This module will be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis and is “grade neutral” in the context of Degree GPA calculations.
Successful completion of the module will result in the award of the credits, with a module grade "P" assigned.
An unsuccessful attempt at the module will result in the credits not being awarded. In this case the student must, in consultation with the module coordinator and depending upon feasibility, either undertake a second and final internship or be assigned to complete a project/dissertation.
