ECON2002J Intermediate Macroeconomics

The principal aim of this course is to provide the student with a solid understanding of macroeconomics and related phenomena. It will ensure that students can apply macroeconomic analysis and tools to the study of economics problems.

In particular, we will:
• Understand the workings of the modern macroeconomy in the short run.
• Place emphasis on how a government can deal with economic shocks especially those that affect a small open economy.
• Emphasize the role of expectations, flexibility and the time frame in macroeconomics.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to understand the main problems facing Governments and Central Banks in pursuing Macroeconomic policy objectives, with particular reference to achieving a level of economic activity which maximizes employment and at the same time achieves a low rate of inflation.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
We will have lectures and homework assignments on policy-oriented formal economic models of the macroeconomy, focused on the short-term business cycle.
