Curricular information is subject to change.

This module introduces students to mathematical methods used in solving economic problems. Quantitative techniques are developed through application to core economic concepts, providing an important foundation for Stage 2 and Stage 3 economics modules.
The module is designed around a structured, technology-enhanced blended-learning model that gives students repeated opportunities to learn, practise, consolidate and check their understanding each week.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. demonstrate a basic knowledge of quantitative techniques used in economics;
2. apply mathematical methods to solve introductory economic problems;
3. interpret quantitative results in the context of economic applications; and
4. use the quantitative skills developed in the module as a foundation for further study in economics at Levels 2 and 3.

Indicative Module Content:

The United Nations identified seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as core to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UCD contributes in general to SDG 4 Quality Education. Further SDGs explored within this module if relevant are listed below. A scale of 1 - 5 indicates the extent to which the SDG is covered.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Structured, technology-enhanced blended learning; problem-based and active learning; regular formative assessment through weekly quizzes; and independent learning supported by purpose-built digital resources. Weekly activities are deliberately aligned to create a coherent learning cycle of instruction, practice, consolidation and feedback.

AI tools must not be used to generate or obtain answers during weekly quizzes; doing so constitutes academic misconduct.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Recommendations:

Students who have achieved at least a grade of O3 in Leaving Certificate math (or equivalent) will be more than able for this module.
Students who have not achieved this may still take this module but may need to put some more effort in.
