DRAM40490 Creative Project- Play or Screenplay

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module runs over two semesters, Spring and Summer. Students propose, evolve, draft and submit a piece of creative writing and a reflection document.
Description Semester 2 10 Credits
Spring: Credits awarded on a Pass/Fail basis, based on the completion of the following:
• Creative Project Proposal: A written document outlining the planned creative project, followed by the presentation of this proposal to staff and the student cohort
• Submission of the first sample of the work, normally, opening scenes or another sample indicative of work in progress
• Engagement with the supervisory/developmental process
• Early May - another submission of a WIP sample of creative work (10 pages estimate), and also a sample of writing from the draft reflection document (5 pages), and, finally, a short report outlining the progression of the project (500 words)
Description Semester 3 30 Credits
This part of the module has two components: the completion and submission of a substantial creative writing project and a critical reflection document.
Students will write a Short Play, Radio Play or a Screenplay that is about 30-45 minutes in length, work that showcases their professional talent. It can be writing rooted in more traditional forms or it can be experimental in orientation. This project is developed to a point where the scripted work is ready to be submitted for consideration by a theatre/film production company. (There are no readings/recordings of work envisaged at this stage of the programme, but consideration will be given to these possibilities in the future)

The critical reflection document (5000 words) has four main components: some discussion of the research, writing, drafting and editing phases of the creative project, deliberation on the work in relation to the genres and/or traditions within which the student is writing, a broader reflection that contextualises the work in this contemporary moment, and, finally, some consideration given to the challenges the work may pose during rehearsal, or production, for example, in terms of technical demands, performance style/idiom challenges, and also how the work may place particular demands on audiences.

Please note:
Students are not allowed to submit work that has been previously assessed as a significant component of a module. Work that has been drafted as a writing exercise in any class can be.)
The module convenor must approve of all creative projects.
