About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understand how the theory of soil mechanics can be applied in design practice
2. Design a foundation system within a limit state design framework using analytical approaches or in-situ test data
3. Design and interpret a ground investigation to provide information on which to base a design

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students are taught through predominantly through lectures. A series of worked examples are used to demonstrate the use of geotechnical design calculations.

Two group summary quizzes are conducted during the module. These activities encourage students to interact with their peers, while also providing an opportunity for self assessment.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations

Feedback Strategy/Strategies

• Feedback individually to students, on an activity or draft prior to summative assessment
• Self-assessment activities

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback from the open book class test is provided individually to students in advance of the final assessment. Two group summary quizzes are conducted during the module, in order to provide formative feedback to the students. This provides students with an opportunity for self assessment.
