This is a core, degree-year module for students in the BE of Civil Engineering. In this module, students work in pairs to undertake an engineering research project. Project titles are issued at the beginning of Autumn, and allocated based on academic achievement (grade point averages). Students are also encouraged to propose their own projects for consideration. Once teams have been formed and project assignments finalised, students devise research plans to accomplish the projects. Student teams meet regularly with, and receive broad guidance from, academic supervisors, but teams must work largely on their own initiative. Seminars are given on topics that assist students in accomplishing their projects. Teams are required to make an initial oral presentation (using Powerpoint) to the staff and students that outlines an understanding of the project brief and gives a preliminary plan of work. Later the students submit an inception report documenting their preliminary findings and a Gantt chart of their work programme. A final report (ca. 100 pages) is submitted in duplicate (paper) and electronically near the end of the Spring Trimester. A final presentation using Powerpoint and an oral examination (interview) is also required.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Identify, formulate, analyse and solve a specific engineering or engineering pedagogy problem.
2. Critically review existing information to establish the current state of knowledge and to find case studies that have solved a particular engineering problem, making efficient use of both conventional library sources (books, papers, journals) and other electronic means (web etc.).
3. Devise and implement an appropriate research plan to investigate a specific engineering problem.
4. Communicate project findings effectively to peers and to a wider audience using modern media tools in oral presentations.
5. Write a technical report to a high professional standard.
6. Work effectively in a team with a partner to accomplish a complex engineering task.

Learning Requirements:

Level 4 standing in Civil Engineering. Students must have passed 50 Stage 3 credits and progressed to Stage 4 status.
