Curricular information is subject to change.

CVEN40050 is one of the last structural design modules in the program and is designed to prepare the students towards the near future professional life as graduate structural engineers. It covers the two most widely used construction materials (RC and steel) in a comprehensive way. The aim is that the students can prepare code-compliant structural designs based on clear understanding of the structural design principles and code implementation.
The module provides an overview of the structural design process and the concepts of reliability, stability and robustness, and is based on Eurocode. It covers sustainability in structural design, the detailed design of reinforced concrete beams for flexure, shear, and torsion, design of slender reinforced concrete columns, design of suspended floors, including ribbed and flat slabs, design of water retaining structures and associated calculation of crack width, as well as strut and tie modelling. The module also covers the design of steel single and multi-storey buildings, design to satisfy lateral stability, and the concepts of plastic analysis and design. The design of steel/concrete composite construction is also covered.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, students should be able to complete safe, efficient, and durable structural designs using the two most widely used construction materials: reinforced concrete and steel. Student will be able to:
• Complete detailed design calculations for structural elements to Eurocode requirements.
• Assess the embodied carbon in their structural designs and make design decisions for its minimisation.
• Understand the principles of structural design and apply these principles for the design of reinforced concrete elements for flexure, torsion, buckling, cracking.
• Design deep members using strut-and-tie method.
• Understand and design for structural stability.
• Have an understanding of lower and upper bound theorems of collapse, and apply them in the design of steel beams and portal frames.
• Design steel trusses, beams, and columns in single and multi-storey structures.
• Understand the principles of composite concrete-steel construction.

Indicative Module Content:

The effects of design decisions on the design outcomes and the responsibility of the engineer on the design outcomes.
