(i) This course is designed to be a preparation for work in the profession of engineering in the context of civil and structural engineering practices.(ii) The course ensures that the student has an understanding of the contract documents and practices used in civil and structural engineering.(iii) The course introduces the student to environmental protection and planning requirements in engineering practice.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Through a study of Engineering Practice the students will comprehend and apply:(i) The Engineers Ireland (Institution of Engineers of Ireland) Code of Ethics for professional engineers,(ii) The use of formal contracts in civil engineering practice, and the standard contract documents used in consulting and construction engineering,(iii) The duties and responsibilities of the Engineer's Representative and the Contractor's Engineer; site records and diaries and their role in arbitration,(iv) Health and Safety practices on site; responsibilities for implementing and monitoring safety practices,(v) Contract costing and programming; resources allocations and review procedures.Through a study of Environmental Engineering Practice the students will comprehend and synthesise their understanding of:(i) The purpose and the preparation of SEA / EIA projects in complying with statutory and public hearings requirements,(ii) The concept and the implementation of sustainable engineering elements of EIS's.Through a study of Planning requirements the students will evaluate aspects of:(i) The urban and regional planning systems in Ireland, and their implementation,(ii) the control and allocation of limited national resources.
