This module introduces students to steel and concrete as structural materials. Students will learn how to undertake elementary structural design of steel and reinforced concrete members in accordance with European codes of practice. Topics covered include: limit state design for steel and concrete; design of steel and reinforced concrete structural elements in tension, compression, bending and shear; steel connections and detailing of reinforced concrete.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understand the need for, and the nature of, design codes with the objective of designing safe and economical structures in concrete and steel ; 2. Apply basic structural mechanics to describe the behaviour of steel and concrete structures under loading;3. Design simple structural elements and connections and conduct laboratory experiments to examine the structural behaviour of concrete and steel elements under loading;4. Communicate effectively through the preparation of formal design calculation sheets, structural drawings and laboratory reports.

Indicative Module Content:

1. Limit State Design
2. Eurocode for Steel Beam and Reinforced Concrete Design
3. Design of Steel Beam
4. Lateral Torsional Buckling
5. Beam under compression and bending loads
6. Reinforced Concrete Beam Design
7. Reinforced Concrete Beam under Bending, Compression and Shear
