1. Understand the need for, and the nature of, design codes with the objective of designing safe and economical structures in concrete and steel ; 2. Apply basic structural mechanics to describe the behaviour of steel and concrete structures under loading;3. Design simple structural elements and connections and conduct laboratory experiments to examine the structural behaviour of concrete and steel elements under loading;4. Communicate effectively through the preparation of formal design calculation sheets, structural drawings and laboratory reports.
