Curricular information is subject to change.

This module builds on the foundations established in Stage 2 Geotechnics 1 (CVEN20110), continuing the exploration of key concepts such as effective stress and shear strength, with a particular focus on the triaxial test under both drained and undrained conditions. Students will also be introduced to new topics, including consolidation theory, earth pressures on rigid and flexible retaining structures, bearing capacity, rock mechanics, and site investigation techniques. The module will examine methods for determining essential design parameters through both laboratory and field testing. As part of the module, students will undertake two laboratory experiments.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

1) Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of soil mechanics, including the topics outlined above, 2) carry out, interpret, and report on related lab tests and undertake foundation design both from a settlement and bearing capacity point of view, and 3) understand the principles of geotechnical site investigation and apply practical methods for assessing the stability of retaining wall systems.
