CVEN10050 Intro to Civil & Envir Eng

Academic Year 2021/2022

This module will focus on challenges that Civil Engineers face in the 21st Century. The topics to be covered will be:

"Climate Change & Civil Engineering": This topic will start with a discussion on climate change projections, before then examining the impact of climate change (in particular flooding) on civil engineering infrastructure. It will also investigate how to make infrastructure more resilient to the effects of climate change.

"Transportation for the 21st Century" This topic will focus on the issues around car dependency and the negative consequences associated with it (i.e. congestion, air and noise pollution). It will also look at why we have the transport problems that we have today and how transport engineering (policy, planning and infrastructure provision) can help solve such problems.

"Geohazards" This topic will look at landslides, sinkholes and other ground hazards that affect civil engineering infrastructure and investigate their causes. It will also look at the impact of climate change on these geohazards and discuss what we, as engineers can do to reduce the their risk of occuring.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Understand the impact of climate change on civil engineering infrasturcture
2. Understand modern transportation problems and how transport engineering can help to solve such problems
3. Understand the causes of geohazards (e.g. landslides, sinkholes) and how engineers deal with such issues
4. Communicate effectively by making oral presentations.
