Through a series of exercises students' observation skills, problem solving skills and lateral thinking abilities will be developed. Students will be encouraged and actively engaged in developing creative design solutions, to assigned problems and to critically evaluate these solutions. Throughout the process students will be introduced to techniques and tools of problem solving and they will be encouraged to use these in all their design work. Observation, visualization and communication are central to the innovation cycle. Students will be introduced to visual (sketching) and physical representation (prototyping/model making). Verbal communication of ideas will be developed through in-class presentation of solutions.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module students will be able to:
Develop creative design solutions to problems
Apply problem solving tools and techniques and explain the process for initiating and using creative techniques within project structures
Apply the basic techniques of observation, sketching and prototyping to their design work
Work effectively as part of a design team
Communicate their design concepts and ideas visually and verbally

Indicative Module Content:

Orientation Week
• Acquire individual sketching kit

UCD Week 3
• Introduction to module and module contributors
• Purchase group working studio kit
• Engineers Ireland Presentation
• Introduction to Team working: Effective team working behaviours & Type Dynamics Indicators (TDIs)
• Meet assigned group: Develop Team Policy and Agreement, and identify team strengths and areas for development

UCD Week 4
• Commence sketching
• Using Library resources for assignment research
• Assignment 1 outlined
• Team working skills development: TDI review, influence of personal preferences on team dynamics and interactions

UCD Week 5
• Development of sketching skills instruction and practical
• Introduction to Design Cycle
• Studio: Presentation of Assignment 1 research, followed by idea generation, prototyping, refinement of ideas
• In-studio development of work plan for progression of Assignment 1, with assignment of duties and deliverables for week ahead

UCD Week 6
• Development of sketching skills instruction and practical
• Studio: Presentation of final research for Assignment 1, followed by idea generation, prototyping, final report out
• Individual Learning Journal submission re Assignment 1
• In-studio presentation of details for Assignment 2
• In-studio development of work plan for Assignment 2, with assignment of duties and deliverables for week ahead

UCD Week 7
• Development of sketching skills instruction and practical
• Studio: Presentation of Assignment 2 research, followed by idea generation, prototyping, refinement of ideas
