Module Description

You will be introduced to the range of poetic forms from the free verse to the more regular modes of writing and come to understand the ways that different processes of writing require different formal approaches. A program of reading will introduce you to a range of important poets, and the ways they have used poetry to write about topics ranging from romantic love to political revolution. As a consequence you will come to understand the possibilities that poetry presents in terms of what it can say and the ways it can say it. The course will give you an opportunity to write your own poetry each week in response to the ideas and work presented, and you will receive tutor and peer group feedback through workshops. Through reading your work to your peer group, and taking part in reading activities outside the class, you will develop the performance skills required to present your work to a public.


Assessment will be a via a portfolio of poetry and an accompanying critical and reflective essay.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a workshop based module in which students will be introduced to forms of poetry, discuss the work of other poets and write their own work. Students will also carry out peer review activities where the work of each class member gets feedback on their own work. The workshop is carried out in a professional but supportive manner, and gives class members very valuable information on the ways their work might be read. Those reviewing the work of others also gain important skills in giving constructive feedback.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will receive ongoing tutor and peer review feedback on their writing throughout the semester through workshop activities. They will have the opportunity to change their work or produce new work for the portfolio. Following the completion of the assessment of the portfolio general feedback will be given as a class activity. Individual and specific issues will be addressed through a one-to-one meeting with the tutor.
