The focus of this course is on the novel or collection of short stories on which a student is working. Close, frequent supervision and direction of this work in progress is provided by the course director.

The main elements for consideration are:
1. Language - tone, precision; grammar, syntax, punctuation; avoidance of cliché.
2. Form - suitability; plot, narrative, point of view; dialogue, setting, characterisation; pacing, continuity, timing.
3. Awareness of reader - originality of approach, fidelity of tone, tension, resolution.

Weekly feedback will be provided by the tutor to each student, in class, of an excerpt of that student's major work-in-progress. Feedback will also be provided by peers on weekly excerpts. Written feedback will be provided by the tutor on each student's end-of-semester assignment.
