CRWT20030 Teen & YA Literature

Academic Year 2021/2022

This is an introductory course on reading and writing teen and YA fiction. By reading
examples of well-known teen authors and discussing universal themes, character
development, plot and style the student will learn the conventions that govern this market and
develop ways to make their own writing relevant and appealing to a young readership.
Through weekly reading and writing assignments students will begin to find their voice as a
writer for young people.
The module will provide an opportunity for manuscript critique, critical reflection, peer
review and creative progression. Advice on writing synopses, approaching literary agents and
editing and submitting work will also be addressed.
Students will produce portfolios containing creative pieces aimed at teens, evidencing a full
understanding of both convention and audience.
A combination of critical reflection, writing exercises, peer review and seminar discussion
will enable them to become aware of the demands of writing for teens in the contemporary
publishing world. In addition to this, they will enhance their Research and IT skills through
studying publishers’ and agents’ submission guidelines, as well as researching (and reflecting
upon) children’s authors’ increasingly active online profiles.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
 identify and discuss different styles, genres and trends in young adult fiction
 write original texts suitable for teenagers and young adults, creating a credible
narrative voice and characters that appeal to this readership
 critically review and give feedback on peers’ writing, and use feedback to improve
your own writing.
 write convincing dialogue and gripping narrative, and create situations and characters
with which young adults can identify.
