CRWT20010 Introduction to Creative Writing

Academic Year 2023/2024

This is an introductory course to creative writing, so students are not required to have any previous experience in the field. Students will be encouraged to try out different forms and genres such as fiction, poetry, non-fiction, script-writing. Among the topics considered are the creative writing process, how to access ideas, pre-writing and drafting, editing and fine-tuning, finding your voice, and elements of craft such as character, setting, image, voice. These topics are approached through a series of creative exercises followed by teacher-led discussions, pair and group work. In this context students get an opportunity to discuss the work they have undertaken in class as well as work they may have embarked on independently. A short assignment, usually requiring a creative response and based on classwork, is given every week.
