CHN40160 Teaching Chinese Language and Culture

This module explores theories and approaches of teaching Chinese language and culture to speakers of other languages. The module is composed of five major units: 1) theories of second language acquisition and their applications to Chinese language teaching; 2) developing language skills; 3) textbook review, teaching material development and assessment design; 4) classroom management and making effective use of technology; 5) intercultural awareness and how to teach culture.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Demonstrate advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge and understanding about teaching Chinese language and culture.
• Deal with practical issues arising in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at schools.
• Demonstrate skills in using various teaching methods and approaches to deliver Chinese language and culture modules.
• Be able to present a theoretical understanding of the global communicative competence in the context of education, more specifically of its implication in a Chinese language learning environment.
• Be able to evaluate teaching materials for a specific group of students.
• Adapt original Chinese language materials for in class use.
• Apply a comparative approach to the teaching practice to help students develop a better understanding of the uniqueness of Chinese culture.
• Display skills in organising various activities both inside and outside classroom, including hands-on Chinese culture workshops.
• Use appropriate formal and informal assessment strategies to help students grasp the required cultural knowledge.

Indicative Module Content:

Weeks 1-2
A historical overview of theories and approaches in foreign language acquisition and CFL.

Week 3-4
1. Developing language skills.
2. Material development and assessment of CFL.

Weeks 5-8
1. Emerging research in the field of CFL.
2. Classroom management.

Weeks 9-12
1. Foundation of Chinese Culture: Confucianism, Taoism, Modern Culture
2. Application of philosophies in modern life (family, festivals, food and tea, calligraphy and painting, TCM…)
3. Chinese character and cultural elements/background; the integration of language and culture
4. Inclusiveness and understanding cultures - diversity in classrooms and comparative learning
5. Workshops and teaching purposes

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module combines lectures with class discussions of assigned readings and students' presentation of their individual research project. Active participation is essential to this module.
